Origins
How did it start?
The IN SITU Placemaking Biennale is Macau’s first international event dedicated to exploring how public space can bring people together and spark new possibilities for the city. Conceived by CURB – Center for Architecture and Urbanism, the Biennale builds on the organization’s long-standing work at the crossroads of architecture, design, urban culture, and education, extending these efforts into the city itself and opening them up to both local and international collaboration.
At its heart, IN SITU is about placemaking—a way of thinking about cities that puts people and community life at the center. Rather than focusing only on buildings and infrastructure, placemaking looks at how streets, squares, and public spaces can become vibrant places to meet, share, and connect. It is a collaborative process that draws on local creativity and identity, encouraging everyone to imagine how their city could be lived in and experienced differently.
Through spatial installations, workshops, performances, and cultural activities, the Biennale puts these ideas into practice. It capitalizes on local assets and creativity, while opening Macau to international exchange. The result is a city-wide laboratory where public space becomes a platform for collective imagination, cultural expression, and shared well-being.
Placemaking
Placemaking inspires people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community. Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share, placemaking refers to a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm in order to maximize shared value.
More than just promoting better urban design, placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution.
Macau
Macau is a special administrative region of China, located on the southern coast, bordering Guangdong province and facing the South China Sea. It consists of a peninsula and two islands, combining dense urban areas with scenic waterfronts. With a unique history, Macau blends East and West in its architecture, culture, and traditions. Today, it is home to around 700,000 residents, a vibrant and diverse community that shapes its dynamic city life.
It is a city of contrasts and connections, where heritage and modernity meet, and urban life unfolds across a dense yet dynamic landscape. Known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and diverse communities, Macau offers a unique backdrop for exploring how public space, design, and creativity can intersect.
For the IN SITU Placemaking Biennale, Macau is more than a host city—it is a living canvas, where temporary installations, participatory activities, and community engagement reveal new ways of experiencing the city. From historic streets to open squares, each site becomes a stage for innovation, dialogue, and connection.
